Returning to the Shamanic & Buddhist Roots of Reiki:
Level 1 & 2 Intensive Training
Sept 10 – 15, 2026
For those who feel called to the powerful waterways and sacred power spots of Buliyum Puyuuk—also known as Mt. Shasta—join STAR NATION REIKI’s 2026 cohort as we dial it back to the Japanese shamanic, Shinto, and Buddhist roots of Reiki.
If preparing your vessel through Shinto and Shugendō mountain ascetic practices such as misogi (禊) — a water purification ritual of mind, body, and spirit — and immersive training in Reiki (靈氣) Level I (Shoden) and Level II (Okuden) within a cedar forest dojo deeply resonate, this training is for you.
Held only once a year in Mt. Shasta, this six-day 靈氣 Reiki immersion welcomes beginners, seasoned practitioners of all levels, and anyone drawn to the healing arts as a spiritual path.
禊 Misogi
Misogi is an ancient Japanese Shinto and Shugendō–based water purification ritual that cleanses the mind, body, and spirit of impurities and accumulated energetic debris. It is a core preparatory practice within STAR NATION REIKI training.
Curious how 靈氣 Reiki courses through you and all living things? Wonder how it can be harnessed to restore your body’s own natural healing abilities?
Join the next cohort as we tap into what our ancestors and the ancient ones have always known.
If you feel called to purify, train, connect to Source and receive your Reiju (spiritual transmission aka attunement) in nature, then join us for a spirit-led journey back to remembering who you are. This training often serves as a portal, reconnecting you with your medicine, ancestral lineage(s), and the true gifts you were born to share with the world.
The world needs your medicine now more than ever.
Returning to the
Shamanic & Buddhist Roots of Reiki:
Levels 1 & 2 intensive training
Sept. 10-15, 2026
MT SHASTA, CA
-
Arrive: Thursday, Sept 10, 2026 by 4pm
Depart: Tuesday, Sept 15, 2026 at 12 noon
If possible, please allow for critical integration time by taking a few extra days off following the Reiki training. -
We will spend six days at a beautiful retreat center nestled at the foot of Mt. Shasta, where we slow our roll, cultivate the vessel, and drop into Mother Nature—preparing ourselves to receive the teachings and Reiju 靈授, a sacred spiritual blessing transmitted from teacher to student within the crystalline oasis of Mama Shasta.
As settlers and guests of Turtle Island, we will honor the original ancestors and stewards of the land by learning to be in right relationship with our relatives that make up our natural surroundings.
We will weave in resonant practices drawn from Buddhism, Shinto, Shugendō, Daoism, and the Lakota ways—practicing humility, reciprocity, and deep reverence for the natural world as we walk this 靈氣 Reiki journey together.
This immersion will unfold as a ceremonial arc of purification, cultivation, transmission, and integration. An invitation to connect back to Source, we will channel, experience and learn:
禊 misogi — a Shinto and Shugendō-based water purification practice through 滝行 takigyō, a waterfall meditation and training that cleanses mind, body, and spirit; restoring the flow of ki, spiritual luminosity, and right relationship with the cosmos.
(~2-mile mostly flat round-trip hike, with a short, steep incline at the one-mile mark)traditional Indigenous purification ceremony, held for deep healing, death, and rebirth.
(Participants will be guided in preparing appropriate offerings.)森林浴 shinrin-yoku — the Japanese practice of forest bathing, cultivating presence and attunement with the natural world.
The syncretic spiritual influences and history of 靈氣 Reiki, including its roots in Japanese religious and cultural life.
An introduction to 靈氣 Reiki through the etymology of its kanji characters and its relationship to Japanese shamanic traditions.
五戒 Gokai — the Reiki Principles and Precepts, recited in both Japanese and English.
The Three Pillars of Reiki as the foundation of practice and daily cultivation.
発霊法 Hatsurei Hō — the “method for generating Reiki,” a core practice for self-purification and energetic cultivation.
The three Reiki symbols (靈氣 印 shirushi), including brushstroke practice and sequencing through 書道 shodō (Japanese calligraphy), and their corresponding 呪文 jumon (incantations).
Hand positions for practicing Reiki on yourself and others.
Byōsen — an intuitive scanning method used to guide a Reiki session.
Individual and group distant Reiki practices, including work across time and space.
(Includes a gentle ~2-mile hike.)Exploration of the three major Daoist energy centers, and—if time allows—the seven “basic” chakras as a complementary framework.
(Not part of Usui Sensei’s original teachings, but offered as a comparative lens from ancient Tantric yogic traditions.)Guidance in offering a full Reiki session, including how to open and close a session and how to maintain energetic integrity.
(While “protection” language is a Western construct, many practitioners—especially therapists—find these boundary practices supportive.)Receiving 靈授 Reiju — a direct spiritual blessing and empowerment transmitted from teacher to student.
If time allows: learning how to respectfully harvest spring water and cedar medicine in right relationship and reciprocity with Uŋčí Makȟá — Grandmother Earth.
Practices for remaining open to insight, synchronicity, and connection to Spirit.
If you feel called to purify, to train in the ways of Reiki within the energetically crystalline oasis of Buliyum Puyuuk / Mount Shasta, and to remember who you are at this threshold moment in human history, this spirit-led training is for you.Limited to 19 participants.

I hadn’t known it at the time, but Marie’s decolonized, earth-aligned practice was exactly what I was missing in my Reiki practice and life journey at the time.
Working with the seasonal elements (I was part of an intimate cohort for Marie’s “Four Seasons Summer Solstice Reiki Training” in Mount Shasta), learning to build a sacred fire, purifying our energy centers underneath glacial melt waterfalls, we were cultivating a connection with the planet and her divine intelligence. The outdoor training culminated in group reiki sessions and a final reiju/attunement that came under a full moon with a simple but deeply-felt message: "believe in yourself”. Shedding tears of gratitude and relief by the reiju tent, I felt a weight lifted off my
-
chest, a burden I thought I carried alone. Instead I felt renewed by the support of a beautiful reiki cohort, a true teacher, and spirit itself.
Shortly after the training, I created a ritual to call in my purpose and those who would walk this path with me, and the very next day some new key figures stepped in, changing my life completely.
Looking back, I was trying to find liberation in the academic world, but spiritual freedom was contradictory to the very kind of thinking that they teach you at school.
Marie’s training truly helped me reconnect with my own intuition and realign to my purpose at a time when I felt most lost. As a life path 11, I’ve struggled with understanding what this is all about, but after working with Marie, I’ve regained the strength to return to my work as a writer and artist, to play my part in creating a kinder and more compassionate society.
If you resonate with my story, if you too are searching for that missing something, I believe you'll find it with STAR NATION REIKI.

Ooooo weeee! Learning and truly living the Shamanic and Buddhist Roots of Reiki has forever transformed my life.
After my epic training and attunement, I became activated and elevated in a way that felt like a universal upgrade. I began navigating my day-to-day life and work as a healing arts practitioner with a mighty anchor to ground in the everlasting energy source that connects us all to Mama Nature. This training planted potent seeds into my heart and hands to help me feel and harness the potent power we have forever flowing within.
Marie is an extraordinarily majestic spirit and beacon of love in this wildly hyper distracted and distorted world. The community she has weaved together is radical, revolutionary, yummy, love-filled goodness in every bite.

Learning the healing art of Reiki on the sacred land of Buliyum Puyuuk (Mt. Shasta) was a triple bonus to this already phenomenal experience curated by the galactically beloved Marie Kyoko Morohoshi.
Our wonderful web of badass reiki practitioners are creating mega ripples of change in the world around us, starting from our inner galaxies.
I am super grateful to cross cosmic paths with Marie and wholeheartedly believe in her unique style of deeply mystical magic. It has been an honor to assist and provide support for trainings and also donate to create scholarships for future students. I am so juiced to be part of this beautifully evolving Starnation; a constellation of Reiki jedi warrior stars shining bright and spreading that lovely infinite light.շնորհակալություն , gracias, sukran, and thank you!

marie is an incredible teacher - loving, incredibly knowledgeable, funny, and firm.
Their training beautifully blends personal energetic healing and collective transformation of systems and cultures, all held in the container of accountability and allyship to Indigenous communities. It was life changing for me, between receiving healing from my human and non-human community, building my skills, and soaking in what’s possible in our healing spaces.”

Having completed level 1-2 Reiki training with Marie Morohoshi and STAR NATION REIKI was like coming home; it felt like a natural extension of my work as a healer and the spiritual work I’ve committed myself to over the decades. As a queer JA (Japanese American), I appreciated learning Reiki from Marie, whose deep roots to our culture shine in all aspects of the training, including through tracing the etymologies of the kanji characters and concepts at the core of Reiki, the connection to Shinto and Buddhist religions, and meditation and other practices we were trained in.
It was powerful to be on such beautiful and spiritually charged land, where we easily connected to nature and ourselves, and to top it off, to connect with a cohort
-
that was queer and BIPOC centered. So grateful for that intention and all the teachings (expected and unexpected) that were offered.
I recommend this to any person of Japanese descent who wants to learn from someone whose sensibility is steeped in the culture where Reiki was born. ”

Marie, thank you for the transformative experience. You are wonderfully open and fierce! You created a vulnerable yet joyful, loving, and powerful container. The love emanated from the moment I arrived and was only deepened as time went on. My heart chakra opened immensely and I continued to vibrate from the yummy deliciousness of the training for weeks afterwards.
I made 18 new friends and felt my sense of family expand. During and even after the Reiki training, I kept repeating these three words over and over again to describe my experience: ‘It’s so good!’
Reading them now, several months later, they still ring true. It was wonderful to learn Reiki with Marie and the cohort she/they assembled; and to do it in nature and in the sacred lands and waterways of Mt. Shasta was awe-inspiring. The tools I learned have helped me through some tough times. Reiki has brought me closer to loved ones and most importantly to myself.
I’d do it again!

When I was searching for a Reiki teacher, it was important to me to learn from someone who focused on the cultural origins of Reiki, something that often gets lost in modern Reiki teachings today.
I found that in Marie, whose Japanese-American upbringing informs and provides a unique backdrop for the lessons of Reiki and its history.
Her training on Mount Shasta is so well-curated and beautiful, and I would wholeheartedly recommend it to anyone seeking a more traditional Reiki experience.

In September of 2019, I was winding down and reflecting upon a beautifully full Summer, when I received Marie’s invitation to attend STAR NATION REIKI’S “Returning to the Shamanic and Buddhist Roots of Reiki” training retreat. I knew little about Reiki and also knew several women in my acquaintance circle who claimed to be Reiki practitioners.
I also knew that Marie was an impeccable practitioner of whatever she engaged in. She is completely intentional, focused and encompassing in what I have witnessed her undertaking.
I was intrigued and I committed myself to read the invitation thoroughly and to allow my “gut” to guide me about my next steps. Well, I awoke the next day and still felt a resounding inner “yes”, so I registered for the retreat.
-
It also felt the perfect way to enter my 75th year of living on this planet, given that the retreat was being held in the area of California where my grandparents, mother, auntie and others first lived after leaving Louisiana 100 years prior.
The night before I left for the retreat I had a very strong and memorable dream. In the dream, I was driving with my mother in a car. Upon our arrival at our destination, we were greeted by smiling faces and open arms into a room filled with golden light. We were enveloped in Love!
Well, that is exactly how my arrival felt when my fellow travelers and I arrived at Hestia Retreat Center... into the arms of Love and Light. It felt like a homecoming into the embrace of women, most of whom I’d never met as we were embarking upon a journey together...how magical! The accommodations nestled in nature were completely comfortable and nurturing. The natural environment was a big part of the medicine of the retreat...rushing rivers, creeks, lakes, waterfalls, mineral waters, mountains, boulders and rocks, trees and local flora...Spirit as expressed in nature was our container.
Mealtimes fed our bodies and souls...delicious and nutritious. Those times of breaking bread together in the universal tradition were as tasty as the food and hard to break away from.
As important, however, I felt a spaciousness for my personal time and reflection throughout the retreat time. The schedule/program that was presented by Marie was thoughtfully crafted to allow personal grounding and purification, introduction to Reiki, hands on experience and practice, discussion, ritual and ceremony (including morning and evening meditation), experiences for practice and listening in nature with spaces for genuine connection with fellow participants through sharing, laughter and relaxation. My personal take aways from the retreat are many. I was fed by nature in a place where my ancestors lived, worked and walked. It was my fourth return to the area. I was honored (not coddled, yet respected) as an elder from the indigenous memory and way of the women who were there. I made a connection with a relative from my longtime family of choice, and, perhaps, stimulated some of her ancestral memories.
I had an opportunity to cleanse in the healing waters of Stewart Mineral Springs and to challenge my elder self to plunge into the icy creek. I was able to share in natural conversations, the history of my African American ancestors in Northern California (a lesser known history) with photographs I brought along and stories I had to share. I experienced personal balancing and healing through the medicines, and chakra work offered. I was able to apply my personal prayer practice, integrated with the new (novice) information of Reiki, for personal healing, on behalf of the Winnemem Wintu people and lands, and for my Loved Ones.
I celebrated the eve of my 75th year in my pj’s, without makeup or facade, dancing in the Light in which I had been welcomed into the retreat. How Divine!!Since the retreat, I have regained my daily meditation practice with attention to the importance of chakra balancing. I use the Reiki energy for my personal health maintenance and connect to the Universal Power to project Light and Love into this world where imbalance and separation is rampant.
I humbly do my part with a worldwide team of Reiki practitioners.

Answering the call from Spirit and saying yes to Reiki level 1 & 2 training with Marie has been one of the best decisions I’ve ever made! I’m so grateful to the container that Marie created for us and held so beautifully. The space at Hestia, the food, the icy creek and soaking mineral tubs, and the folks who were called to the training all offered the right alchemy of energy.
I came into retreat feeling I had inklings of a spiritual gift, but had no container to explore it, and here I learned how to still my body & mind so that I can be a clear vessel for Reiki energy to flow.
-
And now a few years out, I’ve cultivated spiritual friendships from our retreat and I feel confident in offering the gifts I’ve learned from Marie. Given these times, I feel blessed and honored to be able to offer reiki at community pop-up healing clinics during these very difficult and challenging times.
CYNTHIA YEE, M.s. & REIKI Practitioner
There are no words to describe how my life has changed since being trained by Marie.
I left the Reiki training feeling more aligned with my true essence and empowered to connect with my gifts and ancestors.
Marie created a space where I truly felt seen and honored and empowered to trust my own intuition. There were so many transformative moments I experienced throughout the training, I can’t even begin to list them all. All I know is that I’ve never felt such inner peace and connectedness to nature and all things than I did when I was in Mt. Shasta.
I am forever grateful that I made the decision to…
-
take part in the “Returning to the Shamanic and Buddhist Roots of Reiki Training” with Marie. Initially I had some fears in attending but as soon as I arrived I felt like I was surrounded by a community that felt like home.
My mom also came to Hestia with me and spent most of the time connecting with the land and received so much unexpected healing while I was participating in the Reiki training. We both received so much from our time at the retreat and noticed we experienced significant spiritual growth and healing within ourselves.
I met my soul family at the training amongst the other students that also attended. I’ve learned so much from them and I’m so grateful I’m still connected to them to this day.
Thank you, Marie! My ancestors and I bow deeply in gratitude to you!
Daphnee G. Valdez
To have been trained and in presence with the depth of love and knowledge from Marie Kyoko Morohoshi, a practioner who divinely weaves and connects healing through a social justice lens, was truly an honor.
As one of her students during the 2019 “Returning to the Shamanic & Buddhist Roots of Reiki: Levels 1 & 2,” I experienced ancestral wisdom, intergenerational stories, community, healing, laughter & joy.
I cannot express how powerful it was to be taught by a Queer, Japanese-American womxn, sharing similar identities as a Queer Pinay.
-
I spent many years feeling odd and fearful of the gifts given to me by Divine and ancestors, but through Marie’s community building among other gifted QTPoCs and LGBTQ+ people, I felt seen, heard, and validated. I cannot wait to continue to work with Marie and continue to spread the healing. Blessings! Maraming salamat po, Marie –mahal kita!
